- Know the RR crossings on a route.
- Avoid crossing where low-slung units can get stuck on raised crossings.
- Know their vehicle’s length and load overhang. Ensure there’s enough space to safely cross.
Railroad Intersections: Seven Steps for Safety
- Approach with care.
- Prepare to stop.
- Look both ways and listen.
- If it won’t fit, don’t commit.
- Look again.
- Cross tracks with care.
- Once vehicle starts to cross tracks, keep going.
If your vehicle stalls at a railroad intersection:
- Get out of the vehicle immediately.
- Move away to avoid flying debris.
- Locate emergency numbers and call for help — away from the tracks.
