Safety – Spring Road Conditions Every Trucker Should Know:
by K. Avey | May 8, 2026 | Safety |
🌧️ 1. Sudden Rain & Hydroplaning
- Spring storms can hit quickly and reduce visibility.
- Watch for: light rain becoming heavy fast, pooling water.
- Tip: Slow down early, increase following distance, and avoid hard braking.
🌬️ 2. High Winds
- Spring brings strong, unpredictable gusts—especially across open plains and mountain passes.
- Empty or lightly loaded trailers are most vulnerable.
- Watch for: weather advisories, wind-prone areas (bridges, gaps).
- Tip: Keep both hands on the wheel and be ready for sudden lateral movement.
🌡️ 3. Freeze–Thaw Damage
- Roads weaken from winter, leading to potholes and uneven surfaces.
- Watch for: rough patches, construction zones starting up again.
- Tip: Scan farther ahead and avoid sudden swerving to miss potholes.
🦌 6. Increased Wildlife Activity
- Animals are more active (mating/migration season).
- Watch for: dawn/dusk movement, wooded or rural highways.
- Tip: Brake in a straight line—don’t swerve a semi at highway speeds.
🚧 7. Road Construction Season
- Spring is when repairs and projects ramp up.
- Watch for: lane shifts, reduced speed zones, flaggers.
- Tip: Expect sudden stops and tighter lanes.
