Frozen equipment is often an obstacle throughout the winter months. Any moving part can freeze after sitting out in cold weather conditions. Complications with the equipment, including dollies, can occur if the equipment is used while frozen.
Fifth wheel plates should be cleared from snow and/or ice prior to coupling in order to ensure a proper connection.
Snow and ice can often cause:
- Build up on the fifth wheel plate, resulting in a high hook
- A ledge in the fifth wheel jaws, preventing proper connection
- Plastic and rubber parts to become brittle, breaking easier
- Condensation and water in air systems to freeze
- Brakes and other moving parts to freeze
Drivers are responsible for inspecting equipment to ensure safe operation and compliance with the DOT Regulations and Operating Agreement terms. Any issue regarding frozen equipment owned by FedEx Ground can be resolved by notifying either a FedEx Ground garage vendor or Fleetnet for assistance. In an emergency event, Fleetnet can be reached by dialing 1.800.972.8872.
