Happy Fall!! This week I wanted to make sure and remind you not to “ Fall “ or slip in wet or icy conditions.
- Drivers Make sure to grab handles, catwalk, and steps are securely mounted, clean, and serviceable.
- Use 3-points of contact facing vehicle, holding firmly onto grab handles, gaining stable, balanced footing, and climbing all steps.
- Wear sturdy, slip resistant footwear with good traction.
Slips don’t just happen getting in and out of your truck. A muddy pothole, parking lot ice or snow near the truck are all conditions that could cause a slip, trip, or fall. You can find these hazards anywhere — truck stops, rest areas, weigh stations, customer locations, as well as your home terminal. Here are some suggestions:
- Use your eyes to sweep your walk path looking for: uneven surfaces , puddles of water or other slippery surfaces, and trip hazards such as curbs or parking blocks
- Provide and maintain adequate lighting.
- Maintain terminal yard and dock areas so that surfaces are even and free of slip and trip hazards, such as potholes, ice, snow, rubbish, or liquid spills.
- Encourage drivers to report customer delivery site fall hazard conditions they are exposed to. Alert customers to unsafe conditions at their site.
- Drivers: Wear footwear suitable for the job.
- Drivers: Use three points contact for truck/trailer entry/exit.
- Keep a clean dock area or tractor/trailer. Dispose of debris.
Get a Grip, don’t slip!
